The Lingering Emotional Toll Following a Devastating Hurricane: A Path of Mental Anguish Across Jamaica.

When Hurricane Melissa struck Jamaica on the 28th of October with ferocious 185mph gusts, it left behind a picture of catastrophic damage. Homes, hospitals, and vital systems were severely compromised, resulting in 32 fatalities and disrupting the lives of an estimated 1.5 million. For mental health expert Toni-Jan Ifill, it was instantly apparent that the material damage would be shadowed by profound and persistent emotional wounds.

“Everyday sounds can activate them,” Ifill states. “A patient spoke of a cart we often move through the halls, whose clatter evoked memories of breaking wood and the roaring storm. She no longer wants to listening to that auditory reminder.”

A month and a half after the catastrophe, which also impacted neighboring Cuba, flashbacks of the terrifying winds continue to trouble many staff at the University Hospital of the West Indies in Kingston. Even the sound of a downpour can now prompt panic among survivors.

The Unseen Cost Alongside Financial Losses

This disaster led to a significant aid package totaling up to $6.7bn over a three-year period and an further payout of $150m from a pioneering catastrophe bond. Yet, experts warn this financial relief fails to account for the psychological cost: extensive emotional suffering—especially among those previously affected from a previous disaster in 2024.

While most attention targets restoring buildings, studies over the past three years demonstrate that the probability of severe anxiety disorders increases significantly after major storms and forced relocation. Mental health professionals are now urging the incorporation of psychological care into disaster response plans across Caribbean nations.

Increased Risks: Displacement and Mental Health

Scholars highlight how long-term dislocation, destroyed jobs, and inadequate services worsen mental health risks. A recent regional study warned of a heightened danger of severe mental health issues after extreme weather. Additional analysis recorded similar anxiety, fear, and emotional distress among people who survived tropical cyclones.

Dr. Eamin Heanoy, a expert who has studied disaster survivors globally, notes that survivors often encounter three primary psychological hurdles: anxiety, depression, and PTSD.

Dr. Rose-Ann Smith, a professor in risk reduction, agrees. She points out that while humans are generally resilient, as the planet continues to warm, psychological well-being is becoming an ever more critical issue—even though extensive research is often insufficient.

Both Smith and Heanoy found that women affected reported more severe emotional impact than male counterparts. “This suggests women are at greater emotional risk than males when disaster strikes,” Smith comments.

The Difficult Journey to Healing

Dr. Heanoy notes that while some early progress in well-being may occur within a twelve-month period, the ultimate prognosis can be unpredictable. The extent to which survivors heal depends heavily on the specific triggers and the support available.

The experts observe that the loss of homes and livelihoods can magnify the emotional challenge to rebuild. Smith calls housing loss “a major source of stress,” notably when people have no economic cushion. “Starting again comes with its own emotional tax,” she says.

Ifill sees the same pattern among her clients: “People who had pre-existing mental health challenges have found it’s significantly worse in this aftermath.”

Apart from the psychological toll, tangible issues remain. The hurricane wiped out key water infrastructure, delaying the complete restoration of clean water. Monetary relief, while necessary, are insufficient to fix the chronic vulnerabilities exposed by the storm.

Social Support as a Essential Foundation

A key finding is that physical reconstruction by itself cannot heal the emotional wounds caused by the loss of loved ones. Studies shows that survivors often find social networks to be more responsive than official aid.

“State support is essential,” Smith says. “When it is lacking, or when it is delayed, neighbors support one another.”

Ifill similarly praises the value of community solidarity in overcoming challenges. She recalls being “impressed by the resilient spirit” among strong communities. “You've lost everything, right? But if a community has a supportive culture, they find lightness about the storm.”

She further acknowledges efforts to encourage psychological self-care after the disaster but advises about the negative effects of doomscrolling. “The guidance included curating news intake, sticking to reliable news, and using messaging apps to stay in touch with loved ones.”

A Growing International Focus

Recently, psychological support has received more focus from world bodies due to the intensifying planetary changes. The growing regularity of hurricanes has prompted the development of frameworks for psychological first aid.

International bodies have released detailed resources to assist responders in providing psychological care in the wake of disasters. These initiatives aim to strengthen community and personal strength by building capacity, reducing shame, and encouraging the seeking of professional help.

Economic resources are also highlighted as fundamental for safeguarding mental health. A agricultural worker from another Caribbean nation, who lost everything in a similar event, emphasizes the hopelessness that arises when expected aid fails to materialize. “Assessments were made... But to this date, we were not granted any payment,” he recounts.

An Appeal for Comprehensive Healing

Experts argue that the Caribbean region contributes a very small fraction of planetary pollution yet bears extreme climate impacts. A rapid and adequately resourced rebuilding is deemed essential to mitigate prolonged suffering.
