The Gaming Giant Recruits Apex Legends Developer to Rescue Challenged Action Game Ambitious Title

The renowned publisher has appointed a seasoned producer from the creators of Apex Legends to oversee the development team at 31st Union, which is currently working on the anticipated over-the-shoulder roguelike extraction-shooter known as Project Ethos.

Leadership Shift Follows Mixed Feedback

The new appointee assumes the role of studio head at the development studio following the exit of former leader Michael Condrey, who was reportedly let go due to the game's disappointing initial reveal last autumn.

Recently, 2K president David Ismailer informed employees about this decision through an official communication, which stressed that playtesting had indicated the need for a distinct game identity.

The president stated that the developers is now refining the project with a renewed focus, aiming to better meet gamer demands.

A Pattern of Key Acquisitions

This announcement echoes a similar step taken by the publisher in August, when they brought on Rod Fergusson from Blizzard to work on the BioShock development group.

Below is the full content from Ismailer's memo:

Hello Everyone—

I know you all just completed your meeting - I hope you’re as thrilled as I am with the positive developments. Previously I shared you all a update, I stated the following: “I believe in this crew. You all are some of the most motivated and creative designers we have had the opportunity to partner with - and we’re looking forward for that relationship to persist.”

Through your commitment and flexibility, especially over the last year, you continue to prove that.

The gamer responses from last autumn’s Project ETHOS demo was enlightening. It validated the potential of a roguelike shooter but indicated we still had work to do. It revealed the need for a clearer brand.

The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve progressed. You accepted the criticism to mind and overhauled Project ETHOS with a renewed goal - one that’s positioned to fulfill its potential to our fans.

The trust in Project ETHOS grows every day. To boost the outstanding development you’ve made, I’m excited to introduce Ben Brinkman as the new Lead of 31st Union. After several months of talks, he starts with us on the specified date.

Ben’s management and experience in the competitive gaming field is extensive, having dedicated the recent years developing and overseeing some of the most recognizable series in the industry, for example the acclaimed shooter, and lately, Apex Legends.

Please join me in greeting him soon. We are all excited to continue seeing the development of Project ETHOS in the weeks to follow.

David

Background of the New Head

Brinkman currently serves in the role of executive producer and production lead at Respawn Entertainment for their flagship title. He earlier worked at major gaming companies in various development positions on the iconic franchise series, and, prior to that, had stints at 2K and Electronic Arts.

Game Information and Vision

Project Ethos was announced in last year together with a early access event. Initially, 31st Union presented the title as a "no-cost, 3rd-person action-packed experience and an exciting step forward on the category."

"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Customize your character in real-time to fit your unique tactics," the description reads. "Challenge the competition with new abilities, challenges, and challenges that change every match. Will you safely extract with your collected items? Alternatively go big, risk it all, and hope your team can secure victory? The option is up to you."

The game lacks an confirmed launch window or platforms, but players can anticipate more updates as production advances.
