The Former President's Woke Alarm Overlooks Europe's Real Danger: Economic Stagnation.

Donald Trump's security policy document offers a misguided assessment of Europe. The document asserts that unrestrained immigration and what it terms "woke" policies represent an existential risk to the continent's identity. Yet, this argument is based on a serious misreading of the reality. The actual challenge confronting the EU is not cultural but technological and economic backwardness.

A Glaring Economic Gap Between Europe and the US

Statistics paint a sobering picture. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP surged by 87%, while a paltry thirteen and a half percent increase for the European Union. During this period, EU GDP per capita fell from over three-quarters to just half of the US level. Strikingly, even Mississippi now boasts a higher per capita income than several leading European economies like France and Italy.

Today, roughly half of the global 50 largest technology firms are US-based, while only four are from Europe.

The Innovation Deficit: The Core Problem

The growing disparity stems from superior efficiency gains in the United States, fueled by breakthroughs and better use of resources. The scene of global tech leadership is decidedly US-centric. In the last five decades, hundreds of American startups have scaled into companies valued at more than ten billion dollars, compared with only fourteen in the European continent.

This gap raises a vital issue: As the competition for future industries like semiconductors, AI, and quantum computing, what is Europe positioned? Most analysts agree it is essentially a two-horse race between the US and China, with European nations starting at a clear handicap.

Underlying Factors of the Continent's Technological Lag

Several major factors account for this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The United States has a far deeper and agile network for financing new ventures. The EU still lacks a true capital markets union, which caps the scale of emerging companies.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Complex and divided rules hamper European business. A American entrepreneur can introduce a product under a single regulatory framework to access a consumer base of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a larger population, is split among 27 different national systems, creating huge internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Views on risk-taking differ sharply. In some EU nations, a startup's collapse was once viewed with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often considered a badge of experience.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a deeply integrated innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. The continent's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has eroded its ability in pioneering research.

The Road Ahead: Grounds for Cautious Optimism

Despite these hurdles, there are reasons for hope. Policymakers are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have started to propose serious reform. Key analyses on European competitiveness and the internal market point to the necessity of major changes.

With the right incentives and regulatory reforms, Europe's strengths could support far greater degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe retains considerable strengths: high-quality human capital, top-tier education systems, and premier research institutions. Coupled with a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these elements have the potential to trigger a new wave of investment and entrepreneurship.

Crucially, even if Europe does not become the leader in developing cutting-edge tech, it can still significantly boost economic output by adopting and adapting advancements from other regions.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now stands at a critical moment. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, the continent's slide in innovation has been gradual. But, if it fails to take bold steps to tackle its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could give way to a sudden and irreversible loss of world influence.
