European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official Says
The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States on five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted figures that were central to campaigns to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the decision.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.
