Administration Announces Government Worker Job Cuts as Shutdown Nears Third Week
The White House disclosed the initiation of government employee layoffs on Friday, following through on prior threats in response to the ongoing federal funding lapse, which is set to stretch into its third straight week.
Formal Statement and Early Information
Russell Vought wrote on social media that “reductions in force have begun,” indicating the government’s process for letting employees go.
While the official did not specify which departments were affected, a treasury spokesperson stated that layoff warnings had been issued within that department. Furthermore, a DHS representative indicated that staff reductions would also occur at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Also, a union representing federal workers announced that members at the Department of Education would be affected by the staff cuts.
Labor Reaction and Legal Challenges
Union leaders cautions that the layoffs would have “severe consequences” on services used by the public and vowed to challenge the moves in court.
“It is disgraceful that the administration has exploited the government shutdown as an pretext to illegally fire numerous employees who deliver essential functions to communities nationwide,” said a national union president, representing the American Federation of Government Employees.
The largest labor federation in the US reacted to the announcement, saying, “Labor organizations will see you in court.”
Legislative Impasse and Funding Battle
Lawmakers from the Democratic party have declined to vote for a Republican-backed bill to restore funding unless it includes provisions related to health policy. After repeated failed attempts, the GOP leadership in the Senate have put the chamber in recess until next Tuesday, meaning the standoff is unlikely to be ended before then.
During a press conference, the GOP leader in the House, the speaker, criticized Senate Democrats for rejecting the Republican bill, which was approved in the lower chamber on a largely partisan basis.
Federal workers’ final pay that government employees will see until Washington Democrats decide to fulfill their duties and reopen the government,” Johnson stated. Beginning shortly, American service members, many of whom live paycheck to paycheck, are going to miss a complete payment.”
Legal and Operational Constraints
Previously, labor groups sought a court injunction to prevent the government from implementing any layoffs during the funding gap. Moreover, a federal judge ordered the government to provide specifics on termination strategies, affected agencies, and whether any government staff had been brought back to execute layoffs.
A report contended that a government shutdown restricts the ability of the administration to carry out firings, citing official advice that acknowledged any long-term staff cuts need to have been started before the funding expired.
Consequences for Employees
The layoffs occurred on the very day that government employees received only a incomplete payment for the final days of the previous month but excluding the beginning of the current month, since appropriations expired at the beginning of the month.
A public service advocate, the president of the advocacy group, criticized the political stalemate’s impact on federal employees.
“It is wrong to make federal employees suffer because our elected officials in the legislature and the White House have not succeeded to keep our government running,” Stier stated. The air traffic controllers, VA nurses, smoke jumpers and food inspectors are not at fault for this funding crisis.”
The irony is that members of Congress and senior White House leaders are still receiving salaries during the funding gap.
